Award-winning Florida author pushes for a blue revolution

Award-winning Gainesville journalist Cynthia Barnett is calling for a national water ethic.  Barnett, a senior writer for Florida Trend Magazine kicks off a national tour for her new book called “Blue Revolution:  Unmaking America’s Water Crisis” this Sunday, October 2nd at 2:15 at the Matheson Museum in Gainesville.  Proceeds from the sale of her new book will help support the Blue Path water awareness programs of Florida’s Eden.  Barnett talked with Florida’s 89.1, WUFT-FM’s Donna Green-Townsend about the need to change attitudes toward the country’s fresh water supplies.

Read to Lead literacy events to feature Gainesville authors of childrens’ books

A multi-city literacy event kicks off tomorrow across the country.  It’s called “Read to Lead.”  Florida’s 89.1, WUFT-FM’s Donna Green-Townsend talked to a Gainesville publisher, Shelley Frazier Mickle who will have special authors on hand to promote literacy awareness.

God of Carnage brings comic relief to adults squabbling over their teens

Three cities one world concert and art auction to benefit sister cities program

Gainesville has been involved in cultural exchange programs with several cities around the world through the years. Now, Oak Hall teachers and students will be participating in an additional exchange with two new sister cities in Israel and Palestine. Florida’s 89.1, WUFT-FM’s Donna Green-Townsend spoke with Sister City Program of Gainesville President Steve Kalishman about the Three Cities One World benefit concert and art auction this Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Cofrin Theatre at Oak Hall School in Gainesville that will help foster this cultural exchange.

Florida Baptist Convention sends thousands of relief workers to help victims of Hurricane Irene

Hurricane recovery efforts are underway from the Carolinas all the way up the Northeast Coast.  Not only are Red Cross and Salvation Army volunteers giving their time to assist victims of Hurricane Irene, but 82-thousand disaster relief volunteers from the Florida Baptist Convention have headed to storm-stricken areas.  They’re serving food from meal trucks, using chainsaws to cut up tree limbs off  homes and shoveling mud from flooded houses.  Florida’s 89.1, WUFT-FM’s Donna Green-Townsend talked with the spokesman for the North American Mission Board, Mike Ebert, about the massive relief effort.

Lake Mary baby turned over to Safe Haven program

Firefighters in Lake Mary, Florida answered a doorbell today and were met with a woman carrying a baby who wanted to leave it with them under the state’s safe-haven program.  The baby was taken to a hospital for evaluation.  The safe-haven program allows parents to bring babies up to seven days old to fire stations and other facilities while remaining anonymous with no questions asked.  Donna Green-Townsend talked to the Founder and CEO of the Safe Haven For Newborns Program, Nick Silverio about today’s case and  why the program makes a difference.

Fish and wildlife officials expand hours for alligator hunt

More than 1.3 million alligators live in Florida.  Next Monday the official state alligator hunting season begins at 5 p.m.  Nearly 7,000 permits have gone out to people who want to try their luck at hunting the reptile.  Donna Green-Townsend talked with the Coordinator for the Alligator Management Program for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Tallahassee, Harry Dutton who says over the weekend the commission even extended the hunt by four hours each day.

‘Grow Gainesville’ plans free forum on urban agriculture

“Urban Agriculture” is fast catching on across the country. Many people who live in urban settings want to grow their own food or raise their own chickens, but sometimes county ordinances don’t allow such activity. Florida’s 89.1, WUFT-FM’s Donna Green-Townsend talked with Gary Hankins, one of the organizers with “Grow Gainesville” which is holding a free public forum tomorrow (Wednesday) night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Gainesville Public Library on the subject.

‘Rock Your Park’ concert Saturday night in Brooksville aims to increase business downtown

Many communities have organized “downtown” music concerts to try and increase the number of people patronizing their businesses downtown. Gainesville has the “Free Fridays” concert series each week at the Bo Diddley plaza. This week it’s featuring the “country blues” sound of Caitlin Eadie. Hernando County has the “Rock Your Park” concert series this month in downtown Brooksville to commemorate parks and recreation month.
