Gator nation mourns loss of former Gator QB John Reaves

  • John Reaves 4(Listen to 23 minute interview with Reaves from 1997 below)

Former All-American quarterback at the University of Florida and pro quarterback for the Tampa Bay Bucs and Bandits, John Reaves, was found dead in his South Tampa home on Tuesday. Authorities are investigating the cause of death. Reaves, who was 67, was found by his son David on Tuesday afternoon. He told authorities it looked as if he had passed away in his sleep.

Editor’s note:

Reaves was considered to be a legend at the University of Florida.  He was the starter on the 1969 Gator team that finished the season 9-1-1.  By the time his career ended at UF in 1971 he was the NCAA’s all-time leading passer and held the SEC record for touchdown passes with 54.

He then went on to be a first-round draft choice in the NFL and played pro football for 14 years from 1972 to 1987.  Ten years were in the NFL and 4 in the USFL.  He played for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Houston Oilers, Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Bandits, and the Bucs. From 1990 to 1994  Reaves was an assistant coach at the University of Florida. In 1995 he became an assistant football coach at the University of South Carolina where he worked coaching quarterbacks and serving as the passing game coordinator.

He also struggled with demons, namely alcohol, with a variety of sessions in rehab. It was a subject he was not afraid to talk about during a 1997 interview with me,  just before the 1997 NFL draft.

Reaves weighed in on the subject of Gator players leaving school early for a chance at the pros, as in the case that year for Gator players Reidel Anthony and Ike Hilliard who were expected to be first-round NFL draft choices.  It was just four and a half months after the Gators won the College National Championship beating FSU 52-20 under the leadership of signal-caller, QB and Heisman Trophy winner, Danny Wuerffel.

In our interview below from 1997, Reaves talked about the pros and cons of leaving school early. He also addressed how academic standards had changed since he was in college and how he thought that was a good move to help players find more meaningful paths once their football careers were over.  And he addressed his struggle with alcohol after growing up with family members who also faced the same addiction.

Short segments from the interview above were included in an award-winning sports feature titled, The Dream To Go Pro.”

It was one of my favorite features to work on and included interview segments from not only John Reaves, but also Peyton Manning, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Weinke, Billy Donovan, Jeremy Foley and Perry McGriff to name a few.

Reaves, who divorced some time after the interview above, continued to battle drugs and alcohol throughout his life, but turned to religion for solace.  At times in his life he was active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, his son David Reaves said his father was among the plaintiffs in a suit filed by former NFL players against the league over concussions and brain trauma. The family is looking to donate Mr. Reaves’ brain toward research for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head hits

He had three grown children and five grandchildren.  A public funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at South Tampa Fellowship Church at 5101 Bayshore Blvd.

Tampa Bay Times article:

John Reaves

John Reaves, former Robinson, Gators and Bucs quarterback, dies at 67

TAMPA — He sprouted on the college football landscape when psychedelia was at its heyday. In the immediate wake of Woodstock, John Reaves dropped back and tossed spirals with fearless, free-spirited aplomb.

“I never saw him intimidated, afraid, in the least,” former University of Florida backup center Larry Morris said.

“He would throw an interception and never think twice about dropping back the next time he got the ball and letting it go. He was just a damn gunslinger.”

It was the type of abandon that partially defined the era. On and off the field, Mr. Reaves experimented, took risks, flourished, fizzled. As decades passed, he became a legend.

And a cautionary tale.  Click here to read more of this article in the Tampa Bay Times

Jacksonville Times-Union article:

Former Gators QB John Reaves, one of school’s most prolific passers, dies at 67

John Reaves, one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Florida Gator history until the Fun and Gun Era under Steve Spurrier, died on Tuesday at his Tampa home. He was 67.

According to tampabay.com, Reaves was found by his son David, who checked on him after he was not heard from in several days. His death is under investigation by the Hillsborough County Medical examiner.

Reaves played at Florida from 1969-1971 and broke the passing records that were held by Spurrier. Reaves is still seventh on UF’s all-time school career passing yardage list with 7,549 in three years (freshman could not play varsity sports at the time) and eighth in TD passes (54).

When he left school, Reaves was the NCAA career leader in yardage and touchdowns. UF went 20-12-1 during his three years, including a 9-1-1 record when he was a sophomore.

Editorial: Super Bowl Ironies

Tennessee's Peyton Manning
Peyton Manning when he was quarterback for theTennessee Vols in 1997

Many sports writers across the country are describing Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVIII between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks as one of the best NFL matchups in history as it will pit the league’s best offense against the best defense.

Sunday’s matchup takes place in the outdoor MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and is expected to be a classic matchup of strength vs. strength.

Seattle’s quarterback Russell Wilson, in just his second season out of the University of Wisconsin, has taken the Seahawks to their second Super Bowl berth in franchise history.

Denver’s quarterback, Peyton Manning, will be playing in his third Super Bowl.  Manning, who is in his 16th season in the pros, has a chance to become the first starting quarterback in the NFL to win the Super Bowl with multiple franchises.  He won Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts.

This may be his third Super Bowl, but there are those in “Gator Country” who won’t let the legendary quarterback forget that there are some accomplishments that eluded him, namely that Manning never beat Florida, never won a College Football National Championship and he never won the coveted Heisman Trophy, even after choosing to stay in college and forego the 1997 NFL draft even though he was considered to be a first round draft choice.  To his credit Manning did lead the Volunteers to an SEC Championship his Senior year, though that was the same year (1997) he lost in the Swamp to the Gators 33 to 20.

Another Gator signal-caller who DID win an SEC Crown, a College Football National Championship AND a Heisman Trophy was none other than Tim Tebow.  Ironically, the Denver Broncos let Tebow go and signed free-agent Peyton Manning despite Tebow’s exciting comeback wins which took the Broncos to the NFL playoffs in 2012.

Tebow continues to be vocal about his desire to continue playing in the NFL.  But after  leaving the Broncos Tebow saw little playing time after he was traded to the New York Jets.  On April 29, 2013, the Jets released Tebow who then signed a two-year, non-guaranteed contract with New England which lasted only a little more than two months.  In late December Tebow was hired by ESPN as a college football analyst.

Tebow may not be on the field during the Super Bowl, but he’s already making headlines for a humorous television ad he will appear in during the game in which he points out how busy he is despite not having an NFL contract.  Tebow talked about the ad during  a guest appearance this past week on ABC’s Good Morning America program.

Audio Archive Feature: Danny Wuerffel Heisman Profile on NPR’s Morning Edition

Aired on NPR’s Morning Edition on December 13th, 1996

1361998173DW-w-trophy-in-uniform- - Copy(Original Intro) In New York tomorrow (Dec.14th,1996) the Heisman Trophy will be awarded to the nation’s top college football player.  One of the top finalists is Danny Wuerffel, the quarterback from the University of Florida who’s helped the Gators win four consecutive Southeastern conference titles and a place in this year’s Sugar Bowl.  But in his home state of Florida, Danny Wuerffel is known for being much more than just a great football player.  From member station WUFT in Gainesville, Donna Green-Townsend has this profile.

Danny Wuerffel 1993 to 1996On December 10th, 2013 Danny Wuerffel was named to the 2013 College Football Hall of Fame Induction Class.   Voters said he had one of the most impressive records ever compiled.   Wuerffel was the only player in college football history to start at quarterback for a conference champion four straight years — plus win a national title and the 1996 Heisman.  In addition, Wuerffel, a two-time first-team academic All-American, was awarded the Draddy Trophy (also called the “academic Heisman”) presented annually by the College Football Hall of Fame, to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete.

And then there were his statistics.  In Wuerffel’s career at UF he completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 10,875 yards, 114 touchdowns and 42 interceptions in starting 36 of his 46 games.

During Wuerffel’s four seasons, Florida won four-consecutive SEC title games.  As a senior, Wuerffel’s 3,625 yards passing yards were an SEC record.  He also set a national record for his 39 touchdowns.   In his final two games in a Gator uniform, Wuerffel threw for 401 yards and 6 touchdowns to beat Alabama (which at the time was the No. 1-ranked pass defense) for that fourth-straight league crown.   In the Sugar Bowl national championship rematch over rival Florida State, Wuerffel  threw for more than 300 yards and 3 touchdowns (also rushing for a TD) in a 52-20 victory against the top-ranked defense in the country

Mike Miller- NBA Rookie of the Year

Following the 2000 college national championship game thousands of Gator fans held up this sign at a celebration in the Odome on campus to encourage Mike Miller to stay at Florida another year.

In March of 2000, University of Florida Sophomore forward Mike Miller sank the final shot in the 69-68 buzzer beater against Butler to take the Gator Basketball Team from the Final Four to the National Championship game.  The dramatic win led to a celebratory pile-up on the basketball court.   The Gators lost to Michigan State in the championship game.  Despite the loss the city of Gainesville held a celebration for the team in the Odome.  Despite the pleas from Gator fans to play one more year at UF, Mike Miller went pro with the Orlando Magic.  He was the 5th overall pick in the first round of the NBA draft in 2000.  As Donna Green-Townsend reports, after another successful year on the hard court, Miller became the NBA rookie of the year.  From my audio archives from the summer of 2001

Miller currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA.   He has also played for the Minnesota TimberwolvesWashington Wizards, and Miami Heat. Not only was he named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2001, but also the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2006. Miller won back to back NBA titles with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.

Ruth Alexander talks about paving the way for women athletes at the University of Florida

Aired on WUFT on December 9th, 2010

When Ruth Alexander first came to the University of Florida in 1969, the “Lady Gator” athletic program did not exist. She had a vision for women’s sports at UF and has recently been nominated by the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame for seeing that vision through. This isn’t the first time she has been recognized. Her work with the “Lady Gators” during the 1970’s helped her become the first woman to be appointed to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports by President Richard Nixon. WUFT FM’s Donna Green-Townsend talked with her this week.

In late December of 2009, University of Florida Gator Football Coach Urban Meyer stunned Gator Nation when he announced he was stepping down as head coach.  Meyer cited a health scare as the reason.  Gator fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when Meyer changed his mind.  Donna Green-Townsend reports.

Gatorade Rebranding Stirs Up the Gators

Originally aired on WUFT February 2, 2009

DSCN4077Viewers of Sunday’s Super Bowl had the chance to see the new marketing strategy for Gatorade.  PepsiCo, the owner of the historic sports drink is banking on its new “G” campaign.  But as Donna Green-Townsend reports, Gators in the swamp at the University of Florida, the birthplace of the product, aren’t happy about the move to deemphasize the Gator in Gatorade.

Full Script:

THINK OF ANY MAJOR FOOTBALL VICTORY AND THERE’S ONE IMAGE YOU’LL ALWAYS SEE.  TAKE THE FINAL MOMENTS U-F FOOTBALL COACH URBAN MEYERIN THE FLORIDA GATORS VICTORY (WIN) OVER THE OKLAHOMA SOONERS IN THE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:

(RADIO ANNOUNCER MICK HUBERT’S PLAY BY PLAY FADES UP) – (BEGIN FADE ON) “TEBOW KNOCKS OVER ANOTHER OKLAHOMA PLAYER ON THE SECONDARY, MIGHT HAVE EVEN SCORED (UP FULL ON) AND URBAN MEYER JUST GOT A GATORADE BATH ON THE SIDELINE”

GATORADE BATHS HAVE BEEN A TRADITION ON PRO AND AMATEUR FIELDS FOR YEARS.  UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA SPOKESMAN STEVE ORLANDO:

STEVE ORLANDO:  THAT’LL NEVER CHANGE.  THAT’S A GREAT TRADITION.

BUT THERE’S A NEW TWIST ON THAT TRADITION.  GONE IS THE EMHASIS ON THE OLD NAME “GATORADE)” IN NEW TV ADS.  PLAYERS WILL NOW SIMPLY DUMP “G” ON THE WINNING COACH.  THE DRINK’S MAKER, PEPSICO, IS REBRANDING ITS PRODUCT.  THE CAMPAIGN IS HARD TO SWALLOW FOR THE FOLKS WHO KNOW GATORADE’S HISTORY.

(GATORADE COMMERCIAL FEATURING SPORTSCASTER KEITH JACKSON) “THE LEGEND WAS BORN IN 1965 IN THE STORIED SWAMP OF FLORIDA WHERE THE SCORCHING HEAT TOOK A BRUTAL TOLL ON THE FLORIDA GATORS.    THE PLAYERS WEREN’T ADEQUATELY HYDRATED AND THEIR PERFORMANCE SUFFERED.  THE ANSWER?  A NEW CARBOHYDRATE ELECTROLYTE BEVERAGE CREATED BY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA DOCTORS. (ROBERT CADE’S VOICE) “NATURALLY WE CALLED OUR STUFF GATORADE.”

MARY CADE IS THE WIDOW OF THE LATE ROBERT CADE, ONE OF THE INVENTORS OF GATORADE. SHE’S L NOT HAPPY TO SEE THE COMPANY MOVE AWAY FROM ITS ORIGIN:

MARY CADE:  “WELL, WE’RE JUST VERY CLOSE TO THE WHOLE THING.  IT WAS DEVELOPED IN MY HUSBAND’S LAB AND BASEMENT AND THEY HAD A LOT OF FUN DOING IT AND NEVER DREAMED IT WOULD EVER BE ANYTHING MORE THAN HELP TO THE GATORS.”

CADE SAYS PEPSICO TOLD HER AND OTHERS ABOUT THE MARKETING CHANGE AT A RECENT GATORADE TRUST MEETING …BUT SHE ISN’T TOTALLY SOLD ON THE “G” CONCEPT:

MARY CADE BITE “PEPSICO HAS BEEN VERY GRACIOUS TO US.  THEY CONTACTED US AND LET US KNOW WHAT THEY WERE PLANNING TO DO AND THEY’VE HAD VERY GOOD MARKETING IN THE PAST.  THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO ESTABLISH A NEW MARKETING PLAN BUT WE WERE A LITTLE SADDENED BY THAT.  AND UH, I SAW ONE MAN JUST LOOKING IN PUZZLEMENT TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IT WAS.  I THINK IT’S BEEN HARD FOR QUITE A FEW PEOPLE JUST SEEING IT ON THE SHELVES AND WHERE IS THE GATORADE.

ADVERTISING HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE SUPERBOWL WITH COMPANIES SPENDING MILLIONS TO SHOW VIEWERS THEIR LATEST CAMPAIGNS.  DURING SUNDAY’S SUPER BOWL, PEPSICO BOUGHT TWO THIRTY SECOND ADS WITH THEIR NEW “G” CAMPAIGN.

(COMMERCIAL STARTS AND FADES UNDER) “G” TO ME MEANS GREATNESS, GOING TO THE GYM I SWEAT.  I FEEL PAIN GETTING HIT BY A TRUCK ENDING UP IN A WHEEL CHAIR, GOING BACK AND DOING THE IRON MAN THREE TIMES.  IT’S WHAT GETS YOU UP AT 6 A.M. WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS AWAKE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE…. (FADE UNDER AS NEEDED FOR TIME)

MUHAMMED ALI, BILLIE JEAN KING, TIGER WOODS AND PEYTON MANNING ARE JUST A FEW OF THE ATHLETES LENDING THEIR VOICES TO THE NEW PITCH.

SPOKESMAN FOR GATORADE, PETE BRACE.

(PETE BRACE BITE) “YOU KNOW ALL ICONIC BRANDS REFRESH THEMSELVES TO BE RELEVANT AND CONTEMPORARY AND THAT’S REALLY WHAT WE’RE DOING. GATORADE REMAINS VERY MUCH A PART OF OUR HERITAGE.  WE HAVE NO INTENTION TO WALK AWAY FROM THE 40 PLUS YEARS OF SWEAT EQUITY WE HAVE BUILT IN THIS ICONIC TRADEMARK.”

THE NEW DESIGN FEATURES A BOLD LETTER “G” WITH ITS ICONIC LIGHTNING BOLT.   GATORADE IS STILL THERE, BUT IN SMALL PRINT AND THAT’S WHAT UPSETS MARY CADE:

“IT DOES SAY IT, BUT IT’S NOT VERY NOTICEABLE.  THE “G” IS WHAT’S NOTICEABLE.  IT’S JUST SO DIFFERENT LOOKING AND THE LIGHTNING BOLT IS A GOOD THING.  I DON’T THINK THAT WAS ORIGINAL, BUT WHOEVER STARTED THAT, I THINK THAT’S SORT OF ASSOCIATED WITH GATORADE, BUT IT’S PRETTY SMALL COMPARED TO THE “G” (LAUGH).  WE’LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.  BUT THEY KNOW, THEY KNOW PRETTY MUCH HOW MOST OF US FEEL AND OF COURSE WE’RE VERY SENTIMENTAL ABOUT IT, AND THAT’S THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH.”

PEPSICO WHICH OWNS GATORADE PAYS ROYALTIES ON THE TRADEMARK.  THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA HAS RECEIVED WELL OVER 100-MILLION DOLLARS FROM PEPSICO.  ROYALTIES ALSO FUND THE GATORADE TRUST WHICH SUPPORTS THREE FOUNDATIONS.  SO NO ONE WANTS THE NEW MARKETING CAMPAIGN TO FAIL.  THEY JUST WISH THE COMPANY WOULD LEAVE THE “GATOR” IN GATORADE.  U-F SPOKESMAN, STEVE ORLANDO:

(STEVE ORLANDO) “YEH, IT’S AN EMOTIONAL THING.  I’LL JUST PUT IT RIGHT OUT THERE.  IT’S AN EMOTIONAL ISSUE FOR A LOT OF REASONS.  FOR ONE THING, THE DEATH OF DR. CADE SO RECENTLY. AND THE CAMPAIGN, THOSE ARE GREAT SPOTS, THE KEITH JACKSON SPOTS AND IT SHOWED SO MUCH ABOUT THE HERITAGE OF THE PRODUCT AND ITS HISTORY HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY   AND OF COURSE THERE WAS THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THAT THE FOOTBALL TEAM JUST WON. SO YOU KNOW, ALL THOSE THINGS ARE COMPLETELY COINCIDENTAL.  WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT ALL TOGETHER, IT SEEMS LIKE, BOY, THIS MAY HAVE BEEN BAD TIMING, BUT I KNOW IT WASN’T PLANNED TO BE THAT WAY AT ALL.  BUT YOU CAN’T HELP BUT THINK OF THOSE THINGS SORT OF TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME.”

GATORADE SPOKESMAN PETE BRACE SAYS THE COMPANY IS SENSITIVE TO THE UNIVERSITY’S SENTIMENTS AND ITS HISTORIC TIES TO THE PRODUCT.

(PETE BRACE)  “THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO US AS ARE THE GATORS AND AGAIN, WE’RE NOT WALKING AWAY FROM THAT HERITAGE THAT WE’VE BUILT UP.”

COACHES LIKE UF TENNIS COACH ANDY JACKSON HAVE A SOLUTION:

(ANDY JACKSON) TO US AND I’M SURE MY GUYS AND ME PERSONALLY, I TAKE A LOT OF PRIDE THAT SUCH A GREAT PRODUCT IS CALLED GATORADE AND I GUESS THEY’RE DOING WHAT’S BEST FOR THEM …FOR US MAYBE THEY CAN MAKE US SOME SPECIAL ONES THAT CONTINUE TO SAY GATORADE

ATHLETES LIKE UF BASKETBALL PLAYERS CHANDLER PARSONS AND RAY SHIPMAN SAY THEY DON’T CARE WHAT’S ON THE LABEL.

(BASKETBALL PLAYERS) I SAW THE COMMERCIAL AND I MEAN AS LONG AS IT STILL TASTES GOOD I’M GOING TO DRINK IT.  I LIKE THE PURPLE FROST, I LIKE GRAPE.

THAT’S GRAPE WITH “G”   For Mid-Florida Public Radio, I’m Donna Green-Townsend

Mark Brunell’s Loyalty to Jacksonville

Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell has done more than lead his relatively new NFL franchise team to the playoffs for four straight seasons.  Brunell is busy establishing a reputation on and off the field.  In 1995 he began a bible study with a few other NFL teammates.  That bible study has grown into Southpoint Community Church in Jacksonville with a congregation of nearly 15-hundred people.   Brunell also started his own foundation to help sick children in the Jacksonville area.  Despite big money offers from other NFL teams, the father of four remains loyal to Jacksonville.
