Celebrating the Life of Claude Jarman

Excerpts from Donna Green-Townsend’s remarks at the Celebration of Life for Claude Jarman held on February 5, 2026, in San Francisco, CA. The video also includes a short film highlighting moments from his life. Jarman won an Oscar for his role as young Jody Baxter in the classic MGM film The Yearling in 1947. The movie, partially filmed in the Ocala National Forest in Florida in 1945, was based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The movie, directed by Clarence Brown, received a total of seven Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman received Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress. In addition to Claude Jarman’s academy award the The Yearling also received Oscars for Best Cinematography and Art Direction.
